Brand Concept
For our packaging project, we introduced “Mriguel,” a tea brand inspired by the Tergui culture of Algeria, where tea is more than just a beverage; it is a deeply cherished tradition. The name “Mriguel,” derived from Algerian slang, signifies “something good and accurate,” perfectly capturing the essence of the product’s quality and the authenticity we strived to embody in the design.
Visual Identity
The visual identity of Mriguel was crafted to reflect the rich heritage of the Tergui people. Drawing inspiration from their culture, we incorporated colors and patterns that evoke the natural tones and intricate designs found in Tergui textiles and art. The packaging, which is available in both bags and boxes, features a distinct visual identity that blends earthy hues with modern elegance. This thoughtful design approach ensures that tea lovers can easily connect with the product, finding in it a perfect blend of tradition and contemporary appeal.
The packaging design skillfully merges traditional hand-drawn elements with contemporary graphic techniques, symbolizing the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity that Mriguel represents. Each component of the design was carefully considered to create a cohesive and engaging visual experience, one that honors the cultural significance of tea in Tergui society.
Pattern Design
The intricate beauty of Tuareg jewelry, known for its handcrafted, symmetrical patterns, served as a significant source of inspiration for the packaging design. These patterns, which tell a story of a rich cultural heritage, were recreated in Illustrator. To preserve the authenticity of these designs, hand-drawn elements were intentionally incorporated, allowing the natural imperfections in the lines to add a touch of originality and depth to the overall design. This approach not only highlights the cultural importance of the patterns but also ensures that the packaging resonates with the authenticity of the Tergui tradition.
The Teapot
At the heart of the design is the teapot, a powerful symbol of the resilience and unique lifestyle of the Tuareg nomads. This teapot was meticulously modeled in Blender 3D and textured using Substance 3D Painter, capturing its distinctive character and durability, which are essential for life in the desert. The teapot serves as a central motif in the design, representing not only the functional aspects of tea preparation but also the cultural and social significance that tea holds within the Tergui community.
Conclusion
In creating the packaging for Mriguel, our goal was to craft a visual identity that not only appeals to modern consumers but also honors and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Tergui people. The project successfully integrates traditional elements with modern design techniques, resulting in a packaging that is both visually striking and culturally meaningful. Although the Mriguel brand is still in its conceptual phase, the process of bringing this idea to life has been a deeply rewarding experience, allowing us to showcase the beauty and significance of Tergui culture in a way that resonates with a contemporary audience.
