This packaging project aims to design a travel-friendly solution for a popular Malaysian souvenir.
I observed that onde-onde is often sold in thin, non-recyclable plastic containers, which are not suitable for travel. As a result, tourists find it difficult to bring it home as a souvenir to share with friends and family. This led me to develop a packaging solution that better protects the product while making it easy to carry in luggage or hand-carry during travel.
The primary goal is to reposition onde-onde as a convenient and appealing souvenir for tourists to bring back to their home countries.
The design is inspired by the form and identity of onde-onde, featuring a round box paired with a green color palette and coconut-inspired patterns for immediate recognition. The lid incorporates a cut-out window that sparks curiosity and highlights the “surprise inside” concept, referencing the signature burst center of onde-onde while revealing a vibrant Melaka-inspired illustration.
Each piece is individually wrapped in crepe paper and tied with hemp string, enhancing protection while conveying a handcrafted, traditional feel. Overall, the design transforms onde-onde into a travel-friendly and meaningful souvenir, balancing cultural authenticity with a modern and engaging user experience.
