Tobermory Lores of Mull – Artistic provenance
THE BRIEF:
Tobermory Distillery, based on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, is home to two distinct whisky ranges: Tobermory and Ledaig.
The objective was to create a limited edition artistic gifting range inspired by the island’s landscapes, heritage, and local stories. The design needed to feel rooted in place, while elevating each whisky into a premium, collectible gift.
THE CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to create a limited range that felt authentic to Mull without becoming too traditional or expected. It needed to reference the island’s history and folklore, but with a contemporary and artistic execution while clearly differentiating Tobermory from Ledaig.
Tobermory needed to feel vibrant, expressive, and approachable, while Ledaig needed a more muted, rugged, and smoky interpretation. Both ranges had to feel distinct, but still belong to one cohesive gifting system.
THE DESIGN SOLUTION:
Each bottle wrap uses a watercoloured map of the Isle of Mull as the core visual device. This creates a strong link to provenance while giving the range an artistic and collectible feel.
The system allows each whisky to tell its own story through colour, tone, and legend. Tobermory uses a more vibrant and expressive treatment, while Ledaig uses a darker, more atmospheric interpretation. Together, the designs create a cohesive range that balances storytelling, craft, and premium gifting cues.
Each expression is linked to a local legend. “The Ballad of the Blue Men” draws from the waters of the Sound of Mull, while “The Swordstone of Mull” references Fingal’s rock, said to have been split by a fiery giant.
THE RESULT:
“Lores of Mull” turns the gifting range into a celebration of the Isle of Mull – its landscapes, legends, and whisky character.
The final range feels rooted in provenance, but contemporary in execution. Each bottle has its own story, while the full system works together as a collectible series.
