Curator’s Insight

A range this varied, sauces, jams, giardiniera, pumpkin cream, faces an obvious risk: without a strong system, a shelf full of these products reads as clutter rather than a collection. Materia’s solution is to standardize the format tightly (white label, black lid, same rough hand-lettering) and let only the illustration carry variation. The tomato becomes a pumpkin becomes a datterino, but the surrounding architecture never moves.

That decision to keep the lettering imperfect, uneven baselines, marker-style strokes, does real work beyond charm. It signals a category position: this isn’t a legacy heritage brand leaning on old-world tradition, nor is it a slick modern FMCG product. It sits deliberately in between, telling the shopper this is small-batch and made by hand, without needing a paragraph of copy to say so.

Repeating “Born and Raised in Italy” across every SKU functions almost like a wordmark substitute. In a range without a dominant central logo, that repeated phrase becomes the thing your eye locks onto across a shelf, doing the recognition job a mark would normally do.

The transferable principle: when a product range is this diverse, consistency doesn’t have to come from a rigid grid. It can come from a consistent voice, in this case, a shared hand, repeated often enough to feel like a signature.
