LOOSE TONGUE — Speak With Heat

Loose Tongue is a conceptual packaging project developed in response to the JDORAW × Pentawards 2026 student brief, created in collaboration with JDO. The project was shortlisted among 20 selected entries and reviewed by the jury in Paris.

Loose Tongue reinterprets the traditional British “devilled tongue”, a once-popular dish now largely forgotten, transforming it into a bold and culturally relevant food brand for a new generation. Rooted in Victorian culinary heritage, where “devilled” referred to spicy, fiery preparations, the concept builds on the dual meaning of “tongue” as both food and expression.

The identity blends references from traditional butcher shops with a contemporary editorial aesthetic, creating a contrast between heritage and modernity. The packaging system introduces three spice levels — A Bit Hot, Quite Hot, and Bloody Hot — each expressed through increasingly irreverent language and tone, turning heat into a narrative device.

A custom box structure enhances the unboxing experience. As it opens, a lenticular visual reveals a playful transformation, reinforcing the brand’s humor and attitude. Irreverent copy and bold messaging extend the identity beyond the product.

Loose Tongue is not simply a revival of a forgotten food, but a cultural statement that challenges expectations and transforms tradition into something unapologetically modern.

Curator’s Insight

What makes this system work is how literally it commits to its own premise. A brand built around the double meaning of “tongue” as both anatomy and speech could easily stop at wordplay, but here the structural packaging is doing the talking. The lenticular reveal inside the box isn’t a novelty add-on, it’s the mechanism that lets the pack perform the transformation the name promises, so the unboxing sequence becomes the argument rather than an illustration of it.

The typographic pairing carries its own tension worth studying. The ornate script “Loose” sits against a blunt, oversized “TONGUE” in a heavy slab face, and that contrast, delicate versus brutal, mirrors the brand’s whole premise: an old-world dish getting a modern, unfiltered voice. The halftone line pattern behind the cow illustration reads almost like a thermal scan, which quietly reinforces the heat narrative without needing a single word to do it.

The heat-level system is the sharper move, though. Rather than using a standard mild-to-hot scale as a footnote, it becomes the copywriting engine for the whole range, giving each tier its own attitude and turning what’s usually a compliance detail into brand voice. That’s a transferable lesson for anyone building a range with variant SKUs: the thing you’re required to disclose (spice level, size, strength) can double as your most flexible storytelling surface if you let its language shift the tone at every tier instead of just the number.
