Castle Freke Gin is an Elemental Irish Fine Sipping Gin, created by Stephen Evans-Freke and inspired by his ancestral home on the untamed Atlantic coast of West Cork, Ireland. With a history spanning over 400 years, Castle Freke is a place shaped by nature, time and the ongoing pursuit of restoration. The gin draws on this rich heritage, translating the spirit of the castle into a distinctive, considered brand.

The concept centres on the connection between heritage, nature and renewal. Every element of the packaging draws inspiration from Castle Freke itself, from its architectural details and ancient symbolism to the story of its revival. Sacred geometry, Celtic symbolism and the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of eternal cycles and rebirth, form a visual language that reflects the castle’s history and its continued evolution.

The result is a bespoke bottle design that brings the story of Castle Freke to life through meaningful details and timeless craftsmanship. A custom-designed stopper incorporates three symbolic elements: the Celtic Cross, inspired by the nearby Carbery High Cross; the Pentacle of Hearts, found within the castle; and the Flower of Life, representing interconnectedness and natural order. Together, these details create a packaging experience that feels deeply connected to its origins.

The design combines bespoke typography, intricate symbolic detailing and carefully considered form. The custom logotype takes inspiration from carved lettering depicted in a painting of the castle that Stephen grew up with and later inherited. Architectural motifs and sacred geometric patterns are woven throughout the design, creating a cohesive visual identity that balances historical reference with contemporary refinement.

Every detail has a story to tell. Rather than relying on conventional Irish gin cues, the packaging draws directly from the castle’s own history, architecture and symbolism. The Celtic Cross stopper, engraved motifs and Ouroboros emblem transform the bottle into a physical expression of the estate’s legacy. The result is a distinctive design where aesthetics and meaning are inseparable, making the packaging as considered as the spirit within.

Castle Freke Gin is a celebration of craftsmanship, heritage and renewal. The packaging establishes a distinctive identity rooted in a genuine sense of place, elevating the bottle beyond a simple vessel into a collectible object with a story to discover. By connecting the gin’s character to the restoration of Castle Freke, the design creates a lasting expression of the brand’s philosophy: that beauty emerges through balance, and that true quality is shaped by time.

Curator’s Insight

The challenge with a heritage spirit is making age feel earned rather than staged. Here the answer is restraint in material and repetition in motif. The amber liquid supplies the colour, so the metal stays limited to a bronze label, collar and stopper. A single bare tree is foiled on the glass, then returns as a blind deboss on the box, where the dark-on-dark treatment only reveals itself under raking light. The stopper has two faces, so the symbolism changes with how the bottle is turned or handled. The neck label also runs its text around the curve, reading more like an inscription than a back label.
