„Lauffener Weingärtner eG“ (“The Lauffen Vintners”) is a registered wine producing cooperative in Württemberg - which comprises around 1.200 member-growers delivering grapes.
“Lauffen am Neckar” is located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in the south-west of Germany, in the middle of the Neckar-valley between Heilbronn and Stuttgart. The members of the cooperative cultivates about 890 hectares of vineyards, there of 120 in terraced steep vineyards. Thanks to the outstanding performance of the member-vintners and their ambition to harvest excellent grapes, the coop achieves not only a production of high quality wines, but also - in spite of the hard physical work in the steep slopes – the perservation of the unique cultural landscape of the Lauffener valley of the river Neckar.
The Lauffener wine history has its beginnings in Roman times. The first proven evidences of wine growing activities in this area dates back to the 8th century. Since the end of the 19th century, due to the German wine-growing crisis, several cooperativs were founded. The foundation of the Lauffener cooperative took place in 1935.
Today, the „Lauffener Weingärtner eG” is one of the best and most successful cooperatives in Germany. In 2012 the „Lauffener Weingärtner eG“ took over (merged) the cooperative “Käsbergkeller Mundelsheim”, which was founded in 1903 and is kept as a separate brand and production site. These wines are crushed and vinified at the Käsberg Cellar in the town of Mundelsheim. Viticulture has a very long tradition in Mundelsheim. In ancient times the Romans recognized the privileges of the outstanding sun-kissed landscape and planted vines. In the following centuries, wine became more and more important for the community. At the beginning of the 20th century, viticulture turned out to be the most important source of income.
Since Roman times viticulture was present at the Mundelsheimer and Lauffener river-slopes. Until today traditional viticulture knowledge from countless generations blends with the ancestral Swabian sense of quality, the aim in preserving of cultural landscape and the heartfelt Württemberger hospitality.
The wine terraces in the famous slopes of the Neckar offer ideal requirements for extraordinary wines, but they also claim four to five times more work in comparison to normal (flat) vineyards. This work input and moreover high cost for repairing and renovating of the historic dry natural stone walls preserves a unique cultural landscape. Thanks to its skilled stone-by-stone stacking they enable a biotope-like niche for flora and fauna.
As a principle for cooperatives, for several generations responsible winegrowing, resource protection and the use of latest technologies are realized conjointly with the common goal to produce top-quality grapes and thereof make the best wines. Regular quality controls have been installed for completing commonly agreed guidelines. For premium wines, the best vineyards are selected and managed under professional control.
