“A clean, modern, social-first South African trivia game designed for fast play, loud laughter, and effortless sharing.”
30 Seconds is South Africa’s most recognisable and widely played trivia board game, enjoyed by families, students, and social groups for over two decades.
The brief was to redesign 30 Seconds with a clean, minimal, rustic-modern aesthetic supported by vibrant accents. The redesign incorporates local references, simple iconography, and concise typography within compact, eco-friendly packaging. The result is visually striking and transforms the game into a social and digital extension of South African Gen Z identity.
The aim of this redesign was to create a version of 30 Seconds that speaks directly to a South African audience while still feeling modern, bold, and globally competitive. Gen Z in South Africa values speed, simplicity, humour, digital integration, and a strong cultural identity. The Mzansi Edition responds to these needs through localised clues, clean iconography, and a high-contrast colour palette inspired by the national flag.
The visual design avoids clichés and excessive heritage-inspired patterns. Instead, it adopts a confident, minimal style that feels timeless and can be reproduced easily across digital and print channels.
The board and cards were designed for clarity and fast gameplay, retaining the classic structure while introducing subtle Mzansi cues such as local slang, township references, and familiar everyday objects. Icons were illustrated in a unified, thick-stroke style to remain legible at small sizes and establish an easily recognisable visual identity. The inclusion of Bushmen-inspired marks in selected categories adds an authentic cultural touch without overwhelming players or resorting to stereotypical aesthetics.
Digital behaviour was also considered throughout the redesign. Gen Z often prefers hybrid experiences, so QR codes and social-ready features were introduced to encourage players to share scores, post memorable moments, and access additional content online. These elements connect the game to contemporary habits while preserving the charm of the physical experience.
The final outcome is a product that feels proudly South African, easy to learn, visually distinctive, and highly playable—something that can live comfortably on retail shelves, in classrooms, and at family gatherings across the country.
