ABOUT
Ania Épices is a French premium spice brand with proud Algerian manufacturing roots. Crafted in Algeria from carefully sourced natural ingredients and exported to the French retail market, the brand is built on a single promise — absolute purity. The line offers 10 natural spices, with no additives and no preservatives.
This project focused exclusively on developing the complete packaging design system for the entire spice range, while remaining faithful to the brand’s existing logo (provided by the client). The mission: create a packaging language that proudly carries Algerian craftsmanship onto modern French supermarket shelves.
CONCEPT
How do you translate the authentic aroma and character of each spice into a silent visual conversation on a crowded supermarket shelf?
The concept was built around a three-zone packaging architecture that combines elegance with functional storytelling — a system where every visual element plays a strategic role in helping the consumer recognize, trust, and choose the product within seconds, without overwhelming them with information.
The challenge was to design a packaging line that feels premium, honest, and instantly recognizable, while allowing each of the 10 spices to express its own distinct personality under one unified brand umbrella.
SOLUTION
The packaging is structured around a three-zone visual system, each part carrying a specific communicative role:
- The Upper Zone — The Unified Black Canvas
A bold matte black background acts as the signature element of the entire collection — a unified visual layer that ties all 10 products together as one cohesive family on the shelf. It hosts the brand logo, the spice name in both French and Arabic (celebrating the brand’s dual cultural identity), and a delicate hand-drawn line-art illustration that visually expresses the natural origin of each spice — its roots, seeds, leaves, flowers, or fruit. -
The Middle Zone — The Transparent Window
A transparent cutout shaped like the brand’s signature emblem sits at the heart of the pouch. It allows the consumer to see the actual product inside — building trust through honest visual transparency, a critical purchase factor for the modern French consumer. -
The Lower Zone — The Color Window
A bold color block mirrors the exact tone of the ground spice inside the pouch. This creates an instant sensory cue — the shopper sees the flavor before opening the pack, transforming color into a silent product identifier on the shelf.
Together, these three zones carry every essential visual element the consumer needs — brand identity, product origin, real product visibility, and flavor recognition — without ever overwhelming the eye. Every detail has a job. Nothing is decorative.
TECHNIQUE
Instead of relying on generic stock imagery, each pouch features custom hand-crafted line-art illustrations depicting the spice in its natural form. This artisanal approach educates the consumer about the origin of each flavor and adds a handcrafted soul to the design.
The typography combines a friendly script for the spice name with a clean structured layout for supporting information, balancing playful warmth with premium refinement — exactly aligned with the client’s brief: “a playful design with a luxurious touch, where every product expresses itself under one unified brand umbrella.”
WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE
The strongest distinctive feature of the system is the bold unified black canvas that runs across all 10 SKUs — it acts as the visual signature of the entire brand and creates a powerful, recognizable presence on the shelf the moment the consumer walks by.
Two strategic exceptions intentionally break the color-matching rule for design intelligence:
- Cumin → Dressed in green, intentionally chosen to differentiate it visually from the family of brown-toned spices and prevent shelf confusion.
- Chicken Spice (Épice Poulet) → Dressed in silver, inspired by aluminum foil and the visual world of poultry preparation.
These exceptions are not breaks in the system — they are the system thinking for itself, demonstrating that smart design knows when to bend its own rules for stronger shelf clarity.
The bilingual French-Arabic typography is another distinctive layer, honoring the brand’s Algerian roots while ensuring full clarity for the French retail consumer — a true reflection of the brand’s identity: French in market, Algerian in soul.
RESULT
A cohesive collection of 10 SKUs — Ras El Hanout, Gingembre, Cumin, Cannelle, Poivron Noir, Curcuma, Épice Poulet, Paprika, Coriandre Moulu, and Carvi — where every pouch tells its own story while remaining unmistakably part of the Ania family.
According to client feedback, the design received strong positive reactions from both packaging printers (praising the precision and quality of the system) and French consumers (engaging positively with the product on shelf).
A packaging system designed to travel with pride — from Algerian soil to French tables, carrying authenticity in every gram.
