Nǎi Nai is a pasta packaging concept inspired by the imagery of a grandmother’s handicrafts and the atmosphere of home comfort. The project’s name refers to the Chinese word nǎi nai, meaning “grandmother,” emphasizing themes of family traditions, care, and craftsmanship.
At the heart of the concept is a visual metaphor that connects two activities requiring patience and skill: making homemade pasta and knitting. The packaging takes the form of a round sewing box with a transparent window on the lid, through which neatly arranged nests of pasta can be seen. Thanks to their distinctive shape, tagliatelle, fettuccine, and pappardelle resemble balls of yarn, while the wooden sticks placed among them are perceived as knitting needles.
Each pasta variety is distinguished by its own color combination, making it easy to identify products within the range while maintaining the integrity of the overall visual system.
The interaction between the packaging and its contents plays a central role in the project. Rather than being hidden inside the box, the pasta becomes the primary visual element of the composition. The transparent window showcases the product’s shape before the package is opened, while its resemblance to balls of yarn serves as the foundation of the entire concept.
The project explores the theme of home cooking through familiar and emotionally resonant imagery. Craftsmanship, care, family traditions, and the pleasure of preparing food are expressed through the metaphor of needlework. The packaging transforms ordinary pasta into a product with character and a story, creating a distinctive and memorable brand identity.
