Fox & Steam is an urban coffee brand and local roastery inspired by Portland’s café culture and its industrial character. The concept is built around a quiet, observant fox, a simple visual that represents curiosity, craft, and the slower rhythm behind making coffee. In a saturated coffee market, the brand takes a more restrained approach, aimed at city dwellers who appreciate well-made coffee, thoughtful design, and a bit of personality in everyday rituals.
Fox & Steam positions it as a small pause in the day, something to slow down for, even briefly, rather than framing coffee as something transactional.
Creative Direction
The identity sits between illustration and system. At its center is the fox character (calm, slightly playful, and understated). It’s not designed to dominate the system, but to sit within it, adding tone and character where needed. The expression is subtle, with a dry sense of humor that keeps the brand from becoming overly polished or rigid.
The palette reinforces this contrast between industrial structure and warmth. A high-visibility signal yellow is used as the primary accent, supported by concrete greys and deep charcoal tones. The combination reflects the visual language of Portland: functional, textured, and visually direct.
Typography and layout are kept consistent and utilitarian, focusing on clarity across packaging, cups, and print applications.
