GRADUS 02: FORMS OF SCENT — SPHERE ORIGIN is an experimental fragrance object by Grain of Design.

The designation GRADUS 02 places SPHERE ORIGIN within an evolving series of objects sharing the same formal DNA across different scales and functions.

The project explores whether a perfume bottle can behave more like a small piece of architecture than a conventional cosmetic object.

Its identity is built around three precise steps and a single glossy red sphere. The intention was to create a compact architectural form whose function is not immediately revealed.

Rather than presenting itself as traditional perfume packaging, SPHERE ORIGIN first appears as a sculptural object. Its purpose becomes clear only through interaction.

SOLUTION

The fragrance mechanism is integrated directly into the stepped body so that the primary silhouette remains uninterrupted. The sprayer is visually concealed from the main viewing angle, while the red sphere acts as a strong identifying element and a point of tension within the otherwise calm geometry.

The outer body is conceived in recycled aluminium with a soft matte ivory finish, chosen for its precision, durability and cool mineral tactility. Inside, a separate glass refill cartridge allows the outer object to remain in use beyond the life of a single fragrance.

The packaging follows the same principle of permanence.

Instead of a conventional disposable perfume box, SPHERE ORIGIN is presented on a stone base beneath a transparent recycled acrylic cover. The base stabilizes and displays the bottle while transforming the packaging into a small architectural vitrine.

Once the fragrance is finished, the base can continue to function as a tray for jewellery, glasses, a candle or other personal objects, while the transparent cover can be reused as a miniature display case.

RESULT

The result is a packaging system designed to remain rather than disappear.

Bottle, refill, base and transparent cover form one cohesive system built around contrast: stone and metal, matte and gloss, geometry and sphere, permanence and scent.

GRADUS 02 shifts perfume packaging away from the traditional language of bottle and box and toward a more architectural, tactile and reusable system.

A piece of architecture, reduced to the scale of scent.
