El Quinto Sol is a fully custom playing card project created by Mexican illustrator and designer Juan Erazo under The Mythographer. The deck transforms Mesoamerican cosmology, mythology, and visual traditions into a contemporary object designed to be played with, explored, and collected. The project consists of 56 custom playing cards and three launch editions: Core, Alebrije, and Mictlantecuhtli; each interpreting the same underlying cosmological system through a different visual and material language. The packaging was therefore designed not simply as a container for the cards, but as the first threshold into the world of each edition.
The concept behind the packaging was to approach each tuck box almost as a miniature illustrated manuscript. Mesoamerican codices were not designed around a Western distinction between image, symbol, text, and narrative; those elements coexist as part of a unified visual language. El Quinto Sol takes inspiration from that principle without attempting to reproduce historical artifacts literally. Instead, the packaging translates that visual density into a contemporary system of custom typography, symbolic forms, illustrated figures, repeated patterns, saturated colors, and tactile print finishes.
The Core Edition establishes the visual identity of the project through an intense orange base combined with blue, green, and yellow details. Metallic green foil and embossing emphasize selected graphic elements, while the inside of the tuck contains a complementary printed pattern. Opening the package is intended to feel like moving from the exterior surface into another layer of the cosmology.
The Alebrije Edition reinterprets the same deck through a brighter and more exuberant visual language inspired by the color, imagination, and craftsmanship associated with Mexican folk art. Concentric graphic lines, contrasting colors, and holographic treatments give the edition a changing appearance as light moves across the surface. Its packaging uses blue metallic foil and embossing to create a different tactile identity while remaining recognizably part of the same family.
The Mictlantecuhtli Edition moves in the opposite direction. Inspired by Mictlantecuhtli, the Mexica Lord of the Underworld, it uses black, metallic gold, orange, turquoise, pink, and other saturated accents to create a darker premium object. The tuck uses embossed metallic gold detailing, while the cards feature gold treatments and orange-gilded edges.
The packaging was developed through a combination of research, hand drawing, watercolor, illustration, and digital design for print production. Early concepts and character studies were drawn traditionally before being refined and prepared digitally. The typography, suit symbols, layouts, patterns, card backs, and packaging graphics were all custom designed specifically for the project. No generative AI was used in the creation of the artwork.
One of the central challenges was creating three packages that could feel radically different without becoming three unrelated products. The solution was to maintain a shared design grammar, proportions, typography, cosmological symbols, illustration style, and structural relationships, while allowing color and finishing techniques to completely transform the personality of each edition.
What makes El Quinto Sol distinctive is that the packaging, cards, and mythology were designed as a single interconnected system. The box is not an afterthought placed around an illustrated deck; it is another surface through which the narrative is expressed. Exterior graphics, interior patterns, foil, embossing, gilding, and card artwork all contribute to the same world.
The project is currently moving into production with KingStar, using 300gsm black-core playing-card stock and specialty-paper tuck boxes with metallic and holographic foil processes, embossing, printed interiors, and selected edge gilding.
El Quinto Sol launched through crowdfunding in September 2026 and reached approximately 14% of its funding goal during its opening days, with early support from playing-card collectors, designers, and people interested in Mesoamerican mythology. The project is intended to be the first release under The Mythographer: a platform for exploring mythology, storytelling, and visual culture through collectible objects and multiple artistic mediums.
