The traditional ceremonial folding of the United States flag requires exactly 13 folds to transform the expansive banner into a pristine, tight blue triangle.

The resulting triangular shape is entirely deliberate; it resembles the tri-cornered (cocked) hats famously worn by General George Washington and Continental Army soldiers during the Revolutionary War. When completed perfectly, the red and white stripes are hidden entirely, leaving only a striking blue field of white stars facing upward.

A highly cherished custom — often recited at military funerals and civic events—assigns a unique symbolic meaning to each individual fold.
