The Breath of the Land

Designed for MIT Saxophone Ensemble’s album The Breath of the Land, this packaging design looks back to Taiwan’s land, culture, and shared historical memory through music. Images and scenes evoked across the album’s repertoire are layered into an illustrated soundscape, giving form to the many textures of Taiwan’s sonic landscape.

At its center, the cover features the silhouette of a saxophone in die-cut relief, revealing Hengchun Old Town and sweeping agricultural fields beneath. The opening invites listeners to rediscover the island through the perspective of a wind instrument—where landscape becomes sound, and sound carries the land outward. A palette of warm yellow and verdant green conveys the music’s vitality and sunlit warmth, while pearlescent foil catches the light to suggest the movement of wind and the quiet flow of breath. Together, the packaging draws listeners back into the rhythms, textures, and living presence of this land.
