Zoela wine

Pifa Montgomery

Zoela is a single-estate wine from the historic family vineyard “Cepas de la Culebra,” located in Riofrío de Aliste at the foothills of the Sierra de la Culebra (Zamora). Annual production varies based on the vintage’s specific characteristics, making this product an exclusive experience for the customer.

For the label design, we drew inspiration from the ancient Zoela tribe. Zoela is the name of a people who inhabited our land during the Celtic era. The Zoelas were part of the Celtic Astures tribe and occupied the territory that today corresponds to Trás-os-Montes (northeastern Portugal) and the area surrounding the Sierra de la Culebra in Zamora. Although a border separates the towns in Spain and Portugal today, it is a fluid and indistinct boundary: trade has always existed, and numerous traditional pilgrimages fostering fellowship between towns on both sides of “the line” continue to this day. Furthermore, the Mirandese language (spoken in the border region of Miranda do Douro and holding co-official language status in Portugal) and our local Alistano (the traditional dialect of our region, now largely fallen out of use) are very similar, both stemming from the common root of the Astur-Leonese language family. Using the name “Zoela” is also a nod to our most emblematic grape variety, Mencía. The prevailing theory regarding this variety’s origins holds that it came from northeastern Portugal—specifically from the region once inhabited by the Zoela people—and subsequently spread to neighboring areas.

The elegant Estal BG Carré bottle shapes the character of this wine. The cork stopper is sealed with red wax, creating a beautiful contrast with the black bottle. The screen-printed label lends a sense of lightness and harmony to the overall design.
