Barbie x Lady Gaga

Barbie × Lady Gaga

At the core of this project lies the central conflict of Lady Gaga’s Mayhem album: the ongoing battle between her “red” and “white” selves. Rather than illustrating this narrative, I built it directly into the physical packaging, turning the act of purchase into an act of liberation.

The doll—representing the captive “white” self—stands bound by ribbon behind an ornate, cage-like metal gate, echoing the theatrical, gothic staging of the Mayhem Ball tour. Until the customer opens the box, she remains imprisoned, trapped within her own reflection. Opening the packaging becomes a literal act of freeing her from that captivity, allowing both the doll to break free and the customer to step into her world.

This gate does more than tell a story: it fully replaces the conventional plastic display window, resulting in a completely plastic-free structure. Its magnetic closure lets collectors — who often display dolls inside their original packaging—open and close the panel repeatedly without damaging the box.

The visual identity leans into the tour’s dark, operatic tone: a fractured Gothic “Barbie” wordmark, a deep red-and-black palette with dramatic curtain motifs, and a reimagined Barbie silhouette fused with Lady Gaga’s signature hair shape to unify both brand identities into a single symbol.

The included collateral takes the form of a formal ball invitation, reinforcing the Mayhem Ball concept through ornate Victorian-Gothic framing, a handwritten signature, and a black envelope marked “From: The House of Mayhem.” The doll’s gown is a custom, restrained reinterpretation of Gaga’s iconic white stage looks—refined enough to remain appropriate for a broad collector audience, including families.

Together, these choices transform a standard collector’s item into a narrative object: one that stages the story of a self imprisoned within another, waiting to be released.
