Diwali Matchbox Packaging

We were approached by GRT Hotels and Resorts for the festive season, Diwali to create a quirky Indian packaging design for gifting purposes that holds Diwali cracker-shaped delicacies in it. Since the Indian festival, Diwali is all about lights, we wanted to honor the real champion of Diwali, the humble matchstick.  A festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil, of light over darkness, Diwali is impossible to revel in without a matchbox. In essence, the matchbox is the key that ties together the holy day of Diwali. With this in mind, we have created exuberant matchbox art that is a festivity of colors.

The concept behind the packaging art – While matchboxes are the most unappreciated daily products, we wanted the theme of the packaging to be a tribute to the Indian matchbox art. The exterior of the packaging showcases the vibe of the festival and how we prepare for the day and celebrate together in the style of Indian matchbox art owing to its quirkiness and kitsch value.

The package holds 6 matchbox-shaped packages each of which is illustrated with different avatars of Goddess Lakshmi, who is one of the significant deities worshipped during Diwali Puja as she is considered the Goddess of wealth and prosperity and is worshipped across India.

Diwali isn’t complete without colors, and that’s the reason for the riot of colors in our design, in the spirit of festivity. We went in for a tin box packaging that gives a nostalgic feel and reminds you of those vintage trunk boxes and also wanted the packaging to be able to reuse even after the festive season.
