Natsya: A Celebration of Rajasthan’s Kathputli Craft
About Natsya
This project delves into the heart of Rajasthan in India, celebrating its Geographical Indication (GI Tag) in India status for the famed craft of Kathputli puppets. These captivating puppet dolls are more than just toys; they’re a vibrant symbol of the state’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations. These unique puppets are a part of Rajasthan’s social and cultural life, referenced in traditional folk songs, tales, and ballads. Natsya, meaning “theatre” in Sanskrit, embodies the perfect fusion of “Natya” (drama/play) and “Kissa” (stories). We celebrate the art of storytelling through these captivating Kathputli dolls, keeping their heritage alive for future generations. Whether you’re a theatre enthusiast or simply love a good story, Natsya promises an experience that blends drama, storytelling, and the magic of Kathputli.
Logo & Branding
The Natsya logo takes the form of a mascot, representing the essence of Kathputli dolls. Inspired by the “Banna-Banni” concept (husband and wife), traditionally depicted as a pair, the logo reflects the harmonious union and cultural significance of these puppets which are also sold in pairs. The logo utilises complementary red and blue, reflecting the vibrant hues of Rajasthani attire, while the playful “Montserrat Alternates” typeface adds a touch of whimsy.
Regular Packaging
The regular packaging draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s Mru-Gurjara architecture, showcasing vibrant colours reminiscent of the region’s painted houses. The intricate cut-out jali window details pay homage to this architectural style while offering a captivating glimpse of the Kathputli dolls within. Adding to the thematic richness, the packaging opens from the top, resembling the grand entrance of a fort door.
Festive Packaging
The festive packaging draws inspiration from the iconic Jaipur gate, incorporating its illustrations. Reflecting the celebratory spirit, the design merges with the traditional Rajasthani craft of Kavad, offering a unique storytelling experience. The front door features a leaflet comic in Devanagiri Marwari, showcasing a conversation between Kathputli dolls. A QR code allows for translation into various languages. This Jaipur-themed packaging, in festive pink, includes an itinerary tailored for the city. Similar designs will be created for other cities like Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, featuring specific colours and content.
Natsya’s packaging transcends function, offering a captivating journey into the heart of Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of Kathputli.
