FEASTING & MOON-GAZING BOX – THE RITUAL OF SHARING IN MID-AUTUMN TRADITIONS

The packaging system is built around the concept of the “Abundant Feast Tray”, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival through the familiar ritual of gathering around the feast and sharing its delights.

CONTEXT & CONCEPT

Well, perhaps the Mid-Autumn feast is simply an excuse for people to sit together.

A few excited children wait eagerly for the feast to begin, while the grown-ups arrange everything beautifully. But in the end, it is all just for the laughter to mingle in the air, and for the heart to feel a little less alone.

A carefully carved pomelo, a bunch of green bananas embracing bright red persimmons, fragrant baked and snowy mooncakes,… each one carries a quiet wish for a year of abundance and peace. And yet, the feast is more than that. It keeps our memories safe – memories of distant moonlit nights, when we were still little, running circles around the courtyard, looking up at the moon while waiting impatiently for that very first bite of mooncake.

Many years have passed, but the Mid-Autumn feast remains, like a gentle fragment of Vietnamese culture, a thread that, no matter how far we wander, always finds a way to pull us home.

PACKAGING STRUCTURE

Exterior Art Box:

The cylindrical box structure embodies iconic symbols of the Mid-Autumn Festival: the full moon, the abundant feast tray filled with traditional treats, the five-fruit tray, and mooncakes. A sturdy box with a matte finish is adorned with a metallic-embossed illustration of children playing the lion dance and carrying lanterns beneath the moonlight. At its heart is a rotating lid designed to invite interaction with the “cultural moon cycle”, echoing the rhythm and passage of the lunar month. The box body features a pattern reinterpreted from motifs found in everyday life.

Interior Experience:

Upon opening the box, the recipient encounters a lively interplay of patterns and geometric forms, where square (Yang) and round (Yin) alternate structures and complement one another. Square inner boxes are nested within the larger cylindrical container, while round mooncakes are nested within square boxes.

Interactive box:

A Vietnamese folk rhyme goes:

On the first, a shell-like sliver,
On the second, a rice leaf.
On the third, a sickle’s hook,
On the fourth, a crescent blade.
On the fifth, the sickle turns,
On the sixth, the moon grows full.
On the tenth, the moon hides away,
On the sixteenth, the moon hangs in the sky.
“shell-like sliver,” “rice leaf,” “sickle hook,” “crescent blade,” and “turning sickle” are images used to describe the changing shapes of the young moon throughout the lunar month.

Visualizing:

The pattern system draws inspiration from familiar rituals and everyday activities associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival:

Spreading the mat (woven sedge mat motif), Gazing at the moon (moon-over-rooftop motif), Looking through the window bars (iron grille motif) & Savoring the treats (traditional rustic cake motif motif).
