Medovy Skaz is a family-run food brand from Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region that connects honey with traditional storytelling. Its name combines honey and “skaz,” a form of oral narrative rooted in folklore. The project explores this connection through contemporary gift packaging designed to be kept and collected.
The concept draws on the fairy-tale image of an apple rolling across a magical saucer, revealing visions. Reinterpreted as a window into different stories, this motif guides both the visual design and the opening experience.
The packaging consists of a red sleeve, a story-specific inner box and a branded clear glass jar. Each variety is paired with a different character or tale: Baba Yaga for buckwheat honey, The Scarlet Flower for floral honey, and Medvedko-Bogatyr for linden honey. The shared sleeve unifies the range, while the inner boxes give each variety its own narrative.
Made from specialty paperboard, the sleeve features a circular die-cut window and a gold circular detail referencing the saucer-and-apple motif. The window offers a glimpse of the artwork beneath. Removing the sleeve reveals the story, and opening the box uncovers the jar, displaying the honey’s natural colour and texture.
This gradual reveal makes storytelling part of the packaging’s construction and the interaction with it. The result is a three-variety packaging concept that brings together food, folklore and gifting, with a consistent structure that can accommodate new varieties and stories.
