Package design for a soft robotic hand that grips objects like a human

Japanese design firm kenma designed the packaging for Bridgestone Corporation’s Soft Robot Hand.

The Soft Robot Hand is a new technology that utilizes the properties of rubber to enable a flexible and secure grip on objects with movements as delicate and dexterous as those of a human hand. Paper was chosen as the material of the packaging to express the “softness.” The edges were rounded in order to acheive an organic shape. Though it was a challenge to produce this shape with paper, it was acheived by the Japanese technology and craftmanship.

For the graphic on the front of the package, the silhouette of the robot hand was used, evoking the birth of a new life.
