The cover of Kafka’s novel The Castle is based on an enlarged charcoal drawing, where the monotony, the sense of unachievable purpose and the sense of power are combined in the figure becoming or growing out of the village.

The alternation of winter coldness and warm interiors that can be sensed in the book has been complemented by an orange colour in the digital transcription of the charcoal drawing.

The diagonal composition, meanwhile, suggests K.’s determination, which pervades the whole book.
