I wanted to turn a conventional, friendly-looking cat into a more mysterious and fearsome character, all while using the smallest amount of colour possible. With the pattern, I wanted toachieve a look similar to a linocut print. For this, I needed to look for attributes that could be used to identify the character even without a title, hence the red hat and the sword on the spine of the book. In the case of the mouse, I chose the colour yellow to convey that we are not looking at any regular mouse. I made the cat’s eyes yellow as well to create more of a connection between the two characters. For the illustration, I made the letters by hand. For the character, I pictured straighter, more definite and fast brushstrokes, which I used a slightly dry brush for.
