Paying homage to the Chinese Zodiac Tiger for the upcoming lunar new year, Creative Director, Max Chionh has taken on the task of making the conventional red packet look super cool-lectible; with creative and kooky reimaginations of the ‘Hadouken’ power fireball from the Nintendo game ‘Street Fighters’; the iconic huat fruit, ong lai (pineapple); and one of Singaporean’s favourite pastime, Mahjong!
Each pack comes with 3 exclusively unique red packets:
• HUATdouken – the 财神虎 (cai shen ye tiger) is busy shooting fireballs of ingots all-year-round
• Ong Lai Cat – The giant cat in an ‘ong lai’ costume (dialect for pineapple)
• Lion Dance – a wordplay on a common New Year auspicious greeting 五褔臨門 (wu fu ling men) which translates to ‘5 blessings arriving at your door’, where the 五 (five) has been replaced by 虎 (tiger). The lettuce in the lion’s mouth represents ‘采菜’ (cai cai – picking vegetables)which sounds like ‘采财’(picking wealth).
MAAD seeks to push the (red) envelope and bring to life a design that elicits one’s senses of sight and touch. With years of collecting red packets and paper samples, we realised that there is a limit to what we can achieve with print. So, this year, we decided to add an embroidery patch to the red packet to achieve a new dimension in ‘print’ design.
Every red packet design is a culmination of ideas and experiences from its predecessors and our hope is that we can keep breaking barriers. This year’s tiger illustrations were a collaboration with Kattoe, a local designer graphic tee brand that specialises in cat illustration tees (which is also founded by Max as its sole creative designer).
KATTOE 虎HU(AT) Tees!
If these 3 tigers totally float your boat, you can get even more HUAT with them as graphic tees to go bai nian in!
ABOUT KATTOE – Kattoe is a local graphic tee brand founded by Max with him as the brand’s sole creative designer. An owner of 2 cats himself, he hopes to translate his love for cats and design into illustrations.
The plan is to turn the whole world into cats and he is starting with graphic tees.
Kattoe’s designs are inspired by icons of their era mashed with a love for cats and a touch of stylistic influence from Japan. The brand’s inspiration flows from every facet of life – art history to the contemporary; cinema to music, and even to f&b – and puts them into the world of cats. Sometimes satirical, sometimes imaginary, but mostly, as an homage to pop culture from past to present (and to spread the love for cats).
