Quinta da Extrema

After many kilometres along a dirt road, we reached this estate, still nameless, and were awestruck by the overwhelming landscape. At an altitude of 650 metres, among cliffs and deep valleys, in the middle of the undergrowth typical of a very dry climate, 106 hectares of vineyards unfold. Only birds and running water are heard, and there are no traces of humanity until the horizon.

Situated on the southeast extreme of the Douro Demarcated Region, at the heart of the International Douro Natural Park, on the Spanish border, this estate is transected by the remarkable granite/schist geological transition that separates the Beira plateau from the first valleys of the Douro River Basin. The altitude and climate characterised by high temperature variations are also major influences on the profiles of the wines produced here.

As a tribute to this inhospitable place where, in extreme weather conditions, the vineyards display their full potential, we created the name Quinta da Extrema and developed an image that honours its geographic position.

The winery designed by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura is a source of great pride. Integrated into the landscape, it has reduced the environmental impact.

For the Cabernet Sauvignon image, we drew inspiration from this winery completely lined with weathering steel, to give the label colour and texture.
