Borea, the Label Carried by the Wind
THE GIN OF THE AMALFI COAST, A LABEL CARRIED BY THE WIND
“Innovation rooted in tradition” is the motto engraved at the entrance of La Torre distillery in Sorrento.
The name comes from the tower that stands within the ancient medieval manor, and it was here that I had the privilege of meeting and telling the story of Davide, a young and enterprising entrepreneur who chose to create his own gin.
We met along the path leading to the distillery, welcomed by enveloping aromas from a lush variety of plants. This reality is the perfect result of a fusion between ancient knowledge and innovation, where vintage stills stand alongside cutting-edge machinery.
At the entrance, Davide explained every structural detail of the distillery, emphasizing how each element tells a story of sacrifices, disappointments, and joys. These joys are exactly what he hopes to pass on to those who choose to taste his gin. A spontaneous question arose: “Why gin, here?”
Davide is fully aware of how vibrant the world of spirits has become, and how the gin and tonic is increasingly appreciated not only by younger consumers, but also by a more mature audience seeking high-quality products. His is a small-scale operation with the ambition to create a luxury product, where nothing is left to chance—not even the pairing of his gin with tonic water. Only the perfect synergy between the two can satisfy his desire to convey emotion through a drink.
This is why the launch of “Emera” is imminent—a tonic water produced within his distillery, designed to create the perfect match with “Borea” gin. This tonic water will be made using citrus trees and their flavors, without giving up quinine, which—like juniper in the past—was once valued for its healing properties.
I ask Davide who this spirit is meant for—who will be tasting it.
This spirit is aimed at an audience that pays close attention to the quality of every element in a cocktail. These are people searching for a product that stands apart, capable of delivering unique emotions—an experience similar to the one Davide himself had in London. A shared journey, meant to create lasting memories.
The choice fell on a transparent bottle, but when it comes to packaging, the goal is to tell the distinctive soul of the distillery through colors, shapes, and details. Great care is taken so that every bottle becomes a collectible piece, connecting with the consumer and making them the protagonist of a story.
Back at the main entrance, the narrative that binds the entrepreneur to the gin and tonic water comes to a close. We part ways not just as fellow travelers, but as long-time friends. This is the effect of the “healing and special” nature of gin and quinine.
And certainly, it is also the result of meeting an authentic person—someone who has turned all of this into a true journey.
