For our redesign of Driftwood’s Naughty Hildegard, an ESB named in honour of Benedictine abbess Hildegard Von Bingen, we decided to focus on her famed discovery of hops as a preservative in beer by using a classic, contemplative pose, reminiscent of religious iconography, and paying special attention to colour design as a way to draw the viewer’s attention from Hilde’s gaze to her hand. Delicate skin tones stand in sharp contrast with the flat black of her habit, all backlit by stained glass with its geometric panels of saturated red and glowing yellow-green.
