This is a mushroom sauce from Yunnan, China. Yunnan has many mountains and rivers, and transportation is extremely underdeveloped. Therefore, locals use bamboo baskets to pick food in the mountains, including mushrooms growing in the forest, which is also the inspiration for packaging design. By localizing packaging design and using the appearance of bamboo baskets to reflect the handpicked feeling, it also expresses the hardships of the working people.

The little girl picking mushrooms is a Chinese nursery rhyme, which also represents that children from poor families take over early. Due to the underdeveloped natural environment in the area, which has caused economic backwardness, local children have been doing agricultural work since childhood, including picking wild shiitake mushrooms for consumption.

Curator’s Insight: I really admire the creativity and cultural sensitivity of this mushroom sauce packaging design. It tells a story of the people and the place where the sauce comes from, and it makes me feel connected to them. The bamboo basket shape is very clever and eye-catching, and it conveys the idea of handpicked freshness and naturalness.
