Creation of an expressive graphic universe dedicated to the goddesses of Roman mythology. The Goddess wines highlight the emblematic grape varieties of the Bordeaux wine region, and break with established traditional codes with a contemporary, impactful design.

The goddesses of Roman mythology

Roman mythology, rich in divinities and playing an important role in religious rituals, festivities or beliefs linked to life and nature. Goddess, is a selection of 3 goddesses and their particularities :

  • Tellus (or Terra) : the goddess of the earth and fertility, depicted here in shimmering colors and surrounded by an abundance of flora and fauna. The Romans worshipped her to ensure fertile soils and successful harvests.
  • Salacie : the marine goddess, linked to salt water, was often venerated by fishermen and sailors and associated with Neptune, the God of the Sea. She was considered the ruler of the calm, peaceful waters of the sea.
  • Cybèle : the oriental goddess adopted by the Romans, personifies the wild, vegetal power of nature. A variety of birds and tropical plants live in harmony around her.

A beneficial link between grape varieties & goddesses

Wine played an important role in Roman mythology. It symbolized fertility, celebration and animated much of Roman social life.

The range features 3 single-varietal wines: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Each is associated with a defining divinity.

  • Tellus & le Merlot : a noble grape variety appreciated for its fruitiness, roundness and suppleness.
  • Salacie & le Cabernet Sauvignon : it is recognized in tasting for its firm tannic structure, rich, complex aromas and ageing potential.
  • Cybèle & le Malbec : Both adopted, Malbec by Bordeaux and Cybèle by the Romans. Intense aromas of black fruits, with spicy and floral notes on the palate.

Historically, the goddesses climatically conditioned the aromas and complexity of different wines in different years. Studio Boam wanted to highlight the aromatic richness of Bordeaux red wines with a modern, offbeat and educational visual composition.

The 3 illustrations, created using nuanced, balanced collages, are accompanied by texts on either side of the deities. They are based on the design of magazine covers, and stand out from most Bordeaux and French wine labels.
