Who is an independent designer? What skills and knowledge should a professional in this field possess?
Undoubtedly, only a solid academic background in the arts can provide a designer with true creative freedom. But what about knowledge of history, culture, religion, geography, biology, economics, and even politics? You might ask, Why would a designer need to know such things? Let’s imagine a businessman from the island of Tasmania — that’s south of Australia — reaches out to you. He produces cosmetics based on kunzea flowers and wants his packaging to feature the Tasmanian tiger surrounded by kunzea blossoms. Now you see why a designer must have a solid grasp of zoology and botany.
But that’s just one client. Now let’s jump across the globe — 17 time zones away — to a client in distant California, on the western coast of the United States. He’s a brandy producer developing a new label dedicated to the Gold Rush era. What do you know about that period? Nothing? Then you understand why a designer needs knowledge of world history.
Sure, you can turn to the internet or even AI. But can either give you a deep understanding of how to design something rooted in a defining historical moment in just a short time?
Can AI suggest the idea of drawing a map of California and placing a donkey on it — the loyal companion of every gold prospector? Can it recommend using a gold pan — the prospector’s main tool — as the bottle cap? Of course not! And it’s important to realize that this is only the creative side of a designer’s work. Alongside creativity, a designer must also possess technical knowledge. They must understand the capabilities of printing houses, metal product manufacturers, and bottle producers.
Design is one of the most complex professions in the world, requiring top-level expertise in the arts as well as a broad understanding of many other human fields.
My name is Rahib. I’m a freelance designer with 30 years of experience — I bring ideas to life both on paper and in pixels. I use AI in my daily work, but just like a pencil or an iPad pen, it’s simply a tool. The real creativity comes from within. If you’ve enjoyed this post, feel free to follow my page. Most of my clients are branding agencies, and many of my favorite projects started with a message from another designer. Perhaps our next project will begin in the same way.
Curator’s Insight
Inspired by California’s Gold Rush heritage, the Osocalis 1849 brandy bottle masterfully blends storytelling with sophisticated design. The bold, rounded glass form evokes vintage decanters, while the standout detail—a custom-molded cap shaped like a gold pan—cleverly adds details to the prospector’s history. Embossed seals and a rich, tactile label amplify the sense of authenticity and craftsmanship. This limited-edition release captures the spirit of a bygone era through thoughtful material choices and iconic symbolism, positioning the brand as a premium tribute to tradition and terroir.
