Oasis Food Truck & Packaging

PROJECT BRIEF

The food truck and other deliverables are a part of a brand and packaging design project at Ball State University.

This project involved reworking and elevating an existing local restaurant into a well-rounded and cohesive food truck experience. I was tasked with designing all sides of the food truck, the menu board, and to-go packaging. Ultimately, the goal was to create an immersive experience for customers that connects with the restaurant’s identity and goals.

MY SOLUTION

I chose to work with the Oasis Diner located west of Indianapolis. This restaurant is a classic, historical diner originating in the 1950s. I took interest in the rich history of the diner, and my visual direction focused on incorporating aspects of its history with an overarchingly retro visual style.

In a way, the Oasis Diner has been on the move since its founding. In 1954, the diner was transported by train from New Jersey to Indiana. After it unfortunately closed in 2008, an effort was made to revitalize the diner. On the move once again, the diner was transported across town where it reopened in 2014.

Highlighting the origin of the restaurant, I incorporated railroad tracks into illustrations and utilized train signage to frame information. The block shadow type and outlines bring a retro feel to the forefront of these designs. Illustrations reinforce Oasis’ history with the pieces of train tracks juxtaposed with classic diner food. The rustier take on the diner’s original yellow and red color palette foster a more industrial, on-the-road feeling within the brand.

RESULT

Across all deliverables, the Oasis food truck offers an immersive experience from start to finish. Within every detail is a piece of history, and it comes together to create cohesive brand materials. Customers become a part of the history of a diner that has been on the move since 1954.
