ÖselBirch new limited-edition raises awareness for biodiversity loss in forests. ÖselBirch is excited to announce the launch of a limited-edition fermented birch water line in a reusable.

With an exquisite limited-edition design, ÖselBirch aims to raise awareness for loss of forest biodiversity. Together with a designer Andre Fangueiro, ÖselBirch worked on a special design inspired by the Ösel forests. The design depicts the thin balance of nature in a contemporary look and feel. “We decided to design a product that was representative of the Birch Trees by having long elongated shapes and introducing a birch bark cap to bring the nature into our user’s touch and feel,” said Andre Fangueiro. This Design aims to bring into the discussion the importance of connecting ourselves with our origins and biodiversity in our day-to-day live.

ÖselBirch special edition design bottles used as a decoration element in a home environment With sustainability in mind, ÖselBirch offers that the life span of this object goes beyond consumption and that the bottle can be reutilized as a decoration element during your daily life. The new design will be launched online only in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Birch water can support forest biodiversity.

According to WWF “below the Canopy” report, there is 53% decline in the size of forest wildlife populations since 1970. Collecting birch water can add another 30 years of life for the forest and its ecosystem. For example, when forest owners would usually sell their wood for timber as soon as it’s considered an “adult tree”, they could instead start collecting birch water for another 30 or so years. This would help the forest biodiversity to flourish for many more years. ÖselBirch is purchasing birch water from several smaller, organic birch forest owners in order to ensure their regular income and incentivize them to keep their forest healthy and thriving.

“Like wild mushrooms, blueberries, or maple water, birch water is also a natural produce from the forest that one can collect once a year. The more additional value we can add to the forest owner by harvesting the produce of the forest the more s/he is incentivized to do maintenance and not sell the woodland for timber”, says Ardon Kaerma, co-founder and operations manager of ÖselBirch. In addition, research has shown, that the birch tree is able to remineralize soils and therefore prepare a good foundation for other species to grow.

“We use organic birch water for different products like fermented refreshment drinks, which are good for your gut. The craft of tapping and fermenting the birch sap we have learned from our grandmother, who has done it for decades”, says Anne-Liis Theisen, co-founder and CEO of ÖselBirch. The new limited-edition designs feature the fermented flavours Sour, Rhubarbie and Minty. {The special edition aims to raise awareness for the loss of forest biodiversity, largely caused by clearcutting}
