Perfume has been popular in the West, and this series showcases ancient Chinese culture through the perspective of a Western perfumer. Inspired by the “Five Elements,” there are five specific scents, each representing one of the elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth.
The “Five Elements” originally symbolized all the natural necessities in people’s daily lives. In this case, the strong connection between the “Five Elements” and our lives is transformed into fragrances, indicating that this “Elemental Perfume” is also essential. It conveys the message: Find your elements and balance your life.
The packaging visual references a famous saying from “Shangshu•Hongfan (Great Plan)” which describes the “Five Elements”:
“Water and rain soak and descend; Fire blazes and ascends; Wood, shaped by carpenters, can be crooked or straight; Metal, molded by artisans, can be yielded and changed; Earth is essential for farmers in sowing and harvesting.”
This text is visualized in a modern way and integrated into the bottle design of the fragrances. The process illustrates how this “Elemental Perfume” is created and nurtured from the beginning. Lastly, each of the “Five Elements” is matched with holographic effects that shows its features and forms. Not only can you smell the East Asian aroma, but you can also explore this mysterious and ancient culture with your imagination and sense of smell.
